The first Games of the Small
States of Europe were held almost a quarter century ago in
San Marino, with a modest 304 athletes competing in seven
sports.Athletics, Basketball,
Cycling, Weightlifting, Judo, Swimming and Shooting were on
the programme for these first Games. Iceland dominated the
swimming and judo competition and came away with first place
in the medals table with 21 gold. Cyprus, which won 14 of
its 15 gold medals in athletics (the other coming from
basketball) tied with Iceland in the total of medals won,
but finished second with fewer gold.
This first edition was one
of the rare occasions in the 24-year history of the GSSE
that participating countries come away with no gold medals.
As many as four countries (Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco
and Malta) failed to win any gold or silver medals. (The
only other occasions were in 1987 in Monaco, in 1991 in
Andorra and in 1993 in Malta).
