'Cyprus Ready to Host Games Today'

NICOSIA, 6 April 2009 - "Cyprus is ready to host the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe. Even if they began tomorrow," said Cyprus Olympic Committee President, Ouranios Ioannides, at a Press Conference, here Monday. "And this is not our own conclusion, but the assessment of the members of the Technical Commission and Heads of Delegations, following their two-day inspection visit on our island."

Mr Ioannides, who also heads the Organising Committee of the 1-6 June Games, expressed his satisfaction on the progress of the preparations. "The representatives of the participating countries who were in Cyprus over the weekend were fully briefed on all aspects of the Games and eventually we received praise and thanks from all." The COC President extended special acknowledgement for their contribution so far to the preparations to General Coordinator, Olga Piperidou, and General Advisor, Dinos Michaelides.

"We received congratulations for the competition handbook, which was put together by Ms Piperidou," said Mr Ioannides.

The only major change to the handbook will be the cancellation of the following disciplines, due to lack of participants:

  • Women's Discus Throw (Athletics)
  • Women's Hammer Throw (Athletics)
  • Women's 3000m Steeplechase (Athletics)
  • Women's Skeet (Shooting)
  • Team Event (Rhythmic Gymnastics)
  • Women's -78kg Category (Judo)
  • Women's +78kg Category (Judo)
  • Men's +100kg (Judo)
  • Men's RS:X (Sailing)
  • Women's RS:X (Sailing)

The COC President made reference to the television coverage of the Games. "A point on which we need to reply to questions put to us by the delegates is the cost of transmission via satellite of the TV feed."

Mr Ioannides also attempted a comparison of this summer's event to the III Games held in Cyprus 20 years ago. "Today's circumstances and conditions are totally different," he said during the Press Conference. "Twenty years ago we finished the construction of the Swimming Pool on the eve of the Games and the Shooting Range on the opening day itself. Today, all the facilities are ready and our staff and officials are highly experienced and enthousiastic. This leads us to believe that Cyprus2009 will be a new point of reference for the Games of the Small States of Europe."
