Baghdatis to Miss GSSE

NICOSIA, 11 May 2009 - Cyprus is most likely to take part in the Tennis tournament of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe without Marcos Baghdatis. The star player of the home team is scheduled to the play in the second Grand Slam event of the season, at Roland Garros, beginning in Paris on 25 May, which may conflict with the GSSE dates of 1-6 June.

National Tennis coach, Yannos Hajigeorgiou, did, however, leave a small glimmer of hope, that the only player to have won a GSSE gold medal for medal might eventually be on the roster. Other players on the GSSE team include Photos Callias, Philippos Tsaggarides, Demetres Leontes and Christopher Koutrouzas.

“Our goal is none other than to be up there and play in the medals matches,” said Hajigeorghiou—although he was quick to point out that this will depend on which athletes San Marino, Luxembourg and Monaco will be fielding. “They have exceptional players and if they come here it will make winning a medal a very tough job.”

Luxembourg’s number one player is Gilles Muller, currently ranked 80th in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking. San Marino could be bringing Italy’s Stefano Galvani, at 249th in the ATP rankings. And Monaco’s star player is Jean-Rene Lisnard, ranked 213th.

Final registration of players should be known within the next few days.
