Transport Network Designed for Games

NICOSIA, 11 May 2009 - A well-studied plan to facilitate the needs of the teams, the journalists and officials attending the Games of the Small States of Europe has been devised by the Organising Committee of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe.

The aim of the plan is to make transportation easier for all those involved in the Games, who will need to travel to and from their places of residence to the relative sports venues which will host the twelve different sports events in Nicosia and Limassol.

CYPRUS 2009 has worked extensively towards developing a transport network that would make access to and from the GSSE venues simpler and quicker. Transportation will be by coaches leaving daily from the hotels hosting the various teams, to the relative sports venues.

Coaches will also be on hand to serve the transportation needs of the other team members, athletes, volunteers and journalists needing to go from one sports venue to another.

The XIII GSSE Organising Committee will also be providing one coach for every participating nation, depending on that team’s needs.

The team leaders of each delegation will also be given their own cars, should it be needed. The same applies for the President of the Olympic Committee of each nation who will attend the XIII GSSE.

For VIP guests who will also be given a car, a police escort will be available for their safe stay in Cyprus.

The delegations taking part in the GSSE will be staying in two cities – Nicosia and Limassol. Due to the distance between the two towns, routes from Nicosia to Limassol and vice versa have been assigned to cover the needs of all parties involved in the Games.

The buses within Nicosia will be making trips from 07:00 hours every 20 minutes carrying passengers to the two main points in the capital – the Makarion and the GSP Sports Complexes. In a bid to keep the timetable running smoothly and to avoid any possible delays, every route will have three coaches operating at the same time.

The transport network will reach all the hotels hosting the teams and will supply routes to all other sports facilities and venues such as the University of Cyprus and the Olympic Shooting Range, but also to Machairas, where the Mountain Bike event will take place.

Limassol sees an easier schedule with the town, with only three sports venues needing to be served. However, the organising committee has still worked towards covering the teams' needs in the best possible way. The teams will be transported from their hotels to the Limassol Sailing Centre (for Beach Volleyball and Sailing), to the "Spyros Kyprianou" Sports Centre (Gymnastics) and to the Limassol Swimming Pool.
