High-Tech Games with Hellas Sat, Lumiere and the CyBC

NICOSIA, 12 May 2009 - Television coverage of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe will be incorporated into the new age of high technology. Cyprus Olympic Committee President, Ouranios Ioannides, announced during a Press Conference at Olympic House here today the organisers' cooperation with Hellas Sat, which will undertake satellite transmission of the GSSE productions. Mr Ioannides also presented details of the production by Lumiere TV and revealed the live transmission schedule of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corportation.

Hellas Sat is working together with the Organising Committee of CYPRUS 2009 for the transmission of feed to the participating countries and to the rest of the world via satellite. Christodoulos Protopapas, Managing Director of Hellas Sat stressed that his company has the capability to transmit to countries covering a total population of three billion. Hellas Sat has already covered 14,000 television events.

Meanwhile, attempts are being made for the XIII GSSE to be the first event in Cyprus and Greece to be produced in High Definition. "Television coverage of the Games will be through the Hellas Sat 2 satellite and parts of the production will also be made available through the official website of the Games (www.cyprus2009.org.cy)," said Mr Protopapas.

Speaking on behalf of Lumiere TV, Managing Director Akis Avraamides pointed out that production of the XIII GSSE will be the biggest such project ever undertaken in Cyprus. "The level of the production will be on par with other important international events and will not fall short of the coverage of any other major sporting event in Europe. The Organisers have signed up the best 'players' in the market in Hellas Sat and the CyBC and I believe this forms a 'Cyprus National Team' ready to win the gold," said Mr Protopapas.

Doros Nicolaou, head of the Sports Service of CyBC announced that the state broadcaster will offer full coverage of the Games, amounting to over 45 hours during the period from 1 to 6 June 2009. "Since 1989, when we provided live coverage for the III GSSE, we are actively participating in the effort for the Games," said Mr Nicolaou. "The CyBC has always been present and has always strived to meet the demands of providing the sporting public with real-time images."

Twenty-one events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be covered live by the CyBC, according to Mr Nicolaou. The daily coverage will be 7-8 hours.

The cooperation of CYPRUS 2009 with the Galanis Sports Data company, which will provide the official statistics of the XIII GSSE is also of special importance. Galanis Sports Data has all the necessary infrastructure and latest-technology equipment for the on-site collection and processing of data, which will then be output for production of TV graphics and for use on the official website of the Games, as well as for distribution in hard copy.

Live statistics of disciplines and matches in Basketball, Volleyball, Athletics and Swimming, amongst others, will be available during the XIII GSSE.

Cyprus Sports Channel will be responsible for the uplink services to the Hellas Sat satellite, according to Mr Ioannides, who closed the conference expressing his gratitude to all the national and local television channels and radio stations for their quick response in the call of CYPRUS 2009 for the promotion of the Games.

"The 40-minute daily roundup of the Games will be provided free to all interested parties," said Mr Ioannides.
