The Power of Cyprus is in Athletics

NICOSIA, 12 May 2009 - Athletics were and still are the greatest power of Cyprus at the Games of the Small States of Europe. The success of the Cypriot track and field athletes has boosted Cyprus to the top of the medal tables of the last three editions of the Games. And this year too, Athletics will spearhead Cyprusís efforts to clinch the first place in the medals table.

As Cyprusís athletes continue their intensive preparation and await the start of the Games, their ambition remains to reach their best performances in order to win as many medals as possible for Cyprus.

In front of a home crowd, the Cypriot athletes expect the support from the fans to help them achieve peak performances and reach or surpass their own personal bests. World High Jump champion Kyriacos Ioannou will be head the team, with more stars following his footsteps.

Cyprus won 41 medals in Athletics at the previous GSSE, in Monaco: Twenty-four were gold, ten were silver and seven were bronze.

Eleni Artymata was at the top of the table, with three gold medals in Monaco (100m, 200m, 4x100m). Artymata had won the same events in the Andorra GSSE in 2005, proving that she is a high level athlete.

Alissa Kallinikou won two gold medals in Monaco (400m, 4x400m), together with Makis Katsantonis (100m, 4x100m), Stefanos Ioannou (110m, 4x100m) and Stefanos Hajinicolaou (400m, 4x400m).

All the Cypriot Track & Field athletes that had won gold medals in Monaco are:
