May 2009 -
While the sun, the sea and the beaches are the
trademarks of Cyprus, Beach Volleyball has not developed
accordingly and as a result there is not much Cypriots
can expect from it during the XIII Games of the Small
States of Europe.
Constantinou, member of the sport's Technical Committee,
explained the reasons. "All athletes are actually indoor
volleyball players. Unfortunately, we haven't had any
infrastructure in Beach Volleyball. The athletes are
very busy during the volleyball season with their teams
and as a result, there is no time for them to prepare
effectively on the sand. Moreover, Beach Volleyball
athletes in Cyprus do not have the opportunity to
participate in international tournaments and improve".
However, the fact that Cyprus will host the GSSE gives
an extra initiative for success. "There are some teams
which are definitely better and more improved than
Cyprus. Some traditional forces are San Marino and
Monaco in men and women respectively, but in any case we
aim to reach the finals," added Mr Constantinou, setting
high goals, considering that during the last two Games,
in Monaco and Andorra, Cyprus settled for just a bronze
medal in the women's tournament. "According to our
potentials, we did our best to be competitive and win
medals. At present we cooperate with experienced coach
Manolis Roumeliotis, who has much knowledge on Beach
Volleyball and has arranged for the National teams to
prepare in Greece".
and womenís teams from all eight countries represented
at the GSSE will participate in Beach Volleyball. The
selection of the Cypriot teams will be confirmed by the
end next week.
