Encouraging Performances in Athletics

NICOSIA, 16 May 2009 - Apostolos Parelis of GSP set a new national record in the Men's Discus Throw, today, on the opening day of the 48th annual Spring Nationals 'Ta Matseia'. Alexandra Klatsia, also of GSP, followed up with a new Games Record in the Women's Discus Throw, for a satisfactory overall impression just two weeks before the start of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe, here.

Parelis had a throw at 59.05m for his new Cyprus record. Klatsia's performance was 48.86m.

Also encouraging on the first day of competition were the performances of Giorgos Arestes in the Men's Shot Put with a Personal Best of 19.34m, and Matthaios Volou in the Men's Long Jump with 7.49m.

The GSP club of Nicosia leads the standings after the first day of competition, with 77 points in the Men's rankings and 59.5 points in the Women's rankings.

Yannakis Matsis, a member of the European Parliament for Cyprus was present at the Nationals, which are named after his late brother, Kyriacos Matsis, a freedom fighter for EOKA, killed by the British in 1958. The Spring Nationals were declared open by Sotiris Adamou, president of the club of Praxandros Kyreneia, which is organising the event.

The Spring Nationals, which are being held at the GSP Sports Complex, where the Athletics competition of the XIII GSSE will be hosted, conclude Sunday evening.
