NICOSIA, 16 May 2009 - Apostolos Parelis
of GSP set a new national record in the Men's Discus
Throw, today, on the opening day of the 48th annual
Spring Nationals 'Ta Matseia'. Alexandra Klatsia, also
of GSP, followed up with a new Games Record in the
Women's Discus Throw, for a satisfactory overall
impression just two weeks before the start of the XIII
Games of the Small States of Europe, here.
a throw at 59.05m for his new Cyprus record. Klatsia's
performance was 48.86m.

performances of Giorgos Arestes in the Men's Shot Put
with a Personal Best of 19.34m, and Matthaios Volou in
the Men's Long Jump with 7.49m.

59.5 points in the Women's rankings.
Matsis, a member of the European Parliament for Cyprus
was present at the Nationals, which are named after his
late brother, Kyriacos Matsis, a freedom fighter for
EOKA, killed by the British in 1958. The Spring
Nationals were declared open by Sotiris Adamou,
president of the club of Praxandros Kyreneia, which is
organising the event.
Nationals, which are being held at the GSP Sports
Complex, where the Athletics competition of the XIII
GSSE will be hosted, conclude Sunday evening.
