NICOSIA, 22 May 2009 -
Sport teams up with Culture, to provide participants and
visitors of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe
with a unique opportunity for immersion in the rich
heritage of Cyprus, on the sidelines of the Games
themselves. Numerous side-events are planned by CYPRUS
2009, to be held throughout the week of the Games, 1-6
June 2009.
In addition to guided tours
around the Old Town of Nicosia and visits to museums and
historical monuments, participants in the XIII GSSE will
have the chance to attend an artistic event on the Myth
of Kinyras, hosted at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Centre
on Wednesday 3 June.
According to Greek
mythology, King Kinyras (or Cinyras) of Cyprus was a son
of Apollo and the husband of Galatea. With Galatea, he
fathered Adonis and Myrrha. Kinyras was revered on
Cyprus as the creator of art and of musical instruments,
such as the flute. The myth holds that Kinyras and his
father, Apollo, held a musical contest to see who was a
better musician with a lyre. Kinyras lost and killed
himself.
A chorodrama dance
performance by the Choir Group "Adouloti Kyrenia" ('Free
Kyrenia' referring to the city on the northern coast of
Cyprus that remains under Turkish military occupation
since 1973) will follow on Thursday 4 June at the
Amphitheatre of the Ayios Dometios Church in Nicosia.
Both the Opening and
Closing Ceremonies of the XIII GSSE will also feature
cultural elements, with music, song and dance
emphasising the history and traditions of Cyprus through
the central theme of youth and its quest for knowledge.
