NICOSIA, 23 May 2009 - The
Small States of Europe movement is in mourning,
tragic death of the San Marino Volleyball team captain,
Alessandro Casadei, just a few days before the opening
of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe. The
36-year-old player, who was very familiar and popular
among the members of all other teams of the Games, died
tragically in an accident with his motorbike.
The Olympic Committee of San Marino
contacted the Organizing Committee of the XIII GSSE with
the sad news and requesting that a minute of silence be
held before every match of San Marino. Additionally, all
players of San Marino will be wearing a black armband.
Both requests were immediately accepted by CYPRUS 2009.
The Cyprus Olympic Committee and the
Cyprus Volleyball Federation have sent letters of
condolences to both the Olympic Committee of San Marino
and to the player's family.
Casadei was the starting setter of the
National team of San Marino the last few years.
