GSSE Country Profile: Luxembourg

NICOSIA, 27 May 2009 – There is no doubt that during CYPRUS 2009 Luxembourg will go down in the history of the Games of the Small States of Europe as the third country to have secured more than 700 medals.

At present, athletes from Luxembourg hold 678 medals and on average claim 54 medals at each game they participate in.

This being the case, it's just a matter of time before the country passes the 700 mark.

Luxembourg's primary goal in the XIII GSSE will most likely be to be break its record of obtaining the 81 medals it claimed in Monaco two years ago; a tough challenge but not entirely impossible.

It does, after all, have a tradition of performing well in the GSSE, as it has never fallen beneath third place. On the other hand, however, it has never claimed first.

Luxembourg is usually ranked behind Cyprus and Iceland (two of the GSSE heavyweights) and sometimes wedges in the second place, as it has done four times in the past (1987, 1991, 1999, and 2003).

Generally Luxembourg performs well in all the GSSE and this is evident through the results.

In fact, in the first two Games (1985, 1987) Luxembourg surpassed Iceland and Cyprus in the final medal rankings (52 in 1985 and 62 in 1987) and two years ago came third, exceeding Iceland in the medal haul (81).

Despite Luxembourg’s solid performance in the GSSE many will be surprised if the athletes from the Grand Duchy manage to surpass the third place they have maintained in the last two GSSE.

Cyprus and Iceland appear to be well prepared enough to maintain their place at the top, in which case Luxembourg will probably have to compete against itself by setting a new personal best.
