GSSE Country Profile: Iceland

NICOSIA, 27 May 2009 Iceland is the biggest country that takes part in the Games of the Small States of Europe, not just by area (103,000 square kilometres, making it ten times larger than Cyprus, second by area in the Games) but also in terms of performance.

The country's record speaks for itself: Iceland was the 'champion' in eight of the twelve Games and has steadily held the first place in the gold medal rankings throughout the history of the GSSE (335 over Cyprus' 304).

From 1985 to 2001 Iceland practically dominated the GSSE and only once failed to top the gold medal rankings.

It was in 1989 that Cyprus surpassed Iceland in the medals table--the same year it was also the organizer.

Iceland's pristine performance record has somewhat declined during the last three Games. In 2003 they only claimed 20 gold medals, which marked their worst performance of all time, while two years later it only managed to secure 26 gold medals--resulting in third place in 2003 and second in 2005.

Despite an improved performance in Monaco two years ago (31 gold medals) they still only managed to secure second place.

Between 2003 and 2007 Iceland's archrival Cyprus has managed to bridge the gap of gold medals by 43. Cyprus is currently 31 gold medals behind Iceland which is expected to do well in the GSSE 2009 as it remains first in overall performance.

Iceland's past performances should not be overlooked, however exceptional, as they hold the record for claiming the most medals in one single Games (97). This feat was accomplished in 1997 when they were also the organisers of the Games and was almost matched by Cyprus in 2007 its total of 93.
