May 2009 –
Cyprus will be represented with 15 athletes--the best it
has to offer--in the Swimming events of the XIII Games
of the Small States of Europe.
The biggest name in the
team is Anna Stylianou, the leading figure at the last
Games, in Monaco two years ago. Stylianou won four out
of the six swimming gold medals of Cyprus in 2007.
Registered for seven events of CYPRUS 2009 (100m, 200m,
400m and 800m, Freestyle, as well as all the relays),
Stylianou is now eager to surpass the four medals she
had won two years ago.
But there are expectations
for gold medals from other Cypriot swimmers too.
Anna Schoholeva is
considered to be the new emerging star of Cyprus
Swimming, judging from the results she had at recent
arises as a favorite for a medal in the Breaststroke
events, even though she has missed a big part of the
preparation due to injury.
In the men's events Yannis
Zinonos, Marios Panagi, and Alexandre Bakhtiarov are
capable of clinching medals for Cyprus.
