Artymata Breaks Into Qualifying Standard For Worlds

NICOSIA, 2 June 2009 - Eleni Artymata of Cyprus raced to first place on Tuesday in the 100m track event securing a new Games record in the process with her finishing time of 11.40.

The 23-year-old from the coastal town of Paralimni beat her own personal best as well as securing a B Qualifying Standard time ahead of the upcoming World Championships in Berlin (15-23 August). The previous record time at the Games of the Small States of Europe had been held by fellow Cypriot Marila Grigoriou with her time of 11.48.

“The only negative thing was the fact that the wind was blowing in my direction”, stated Artymata who was later informed that the wind count at the National Athletics Centre, which is situated at the GSP Sports Complex, was -0.7. Artymata now looks towards collecting two more gold medals in the 200m and 4x100m events.

She will then turn her attention towards the Cypriot Championship between 12-13 June where she will only take part in the 200m event, the European Cup and then the Mediterranean Games in Pescara.
