Double Gold Delight For Luxembourg In Table Tennis

NICOSIA, 3 June 2009 - Luxembourg once again showed their class in table tennis by securing a double scoop of gold medals in the men and womenís team events.

In the second day of the table tennis event of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe, which took place at the "Evangelos Florakis" Multipurpose Hall, the Luxembourg menís team took the gold after defeating Cyprus 3-1.

They had previously beaten Iceland with the same score in the other game earlier in the day.

In the womenís event, Luxembourg was again the team on top as they also defeated hosts Cyprus 3-0 to complete a resounding fourth victory in as many games in the competition. Just like two years earlier in Monaco, San Marino again finished in second place to win the silver with their 3-1 win over Cyprus who themselves ended the competition with the bronze medal and third place. Fourth place went to Monaco after they beat bottom side Iceland 3-0.

The table tennis competition continues on Thursday with the men and womenís doubles event. The menís category sees Liechtenstein, Cyprus and Iceland in Group 1 whilst Group 2 comprises of four teams - San Marino, Luxembourg, Malta and Monaco. The games are set to start at 09:30, 10:10 and 10:50.

The two first teams from each group will face each other in the semifinals (14:30) with each group winner taking on the runner-up of the other group. The semifinals winners will meet in the final at 16:00.

The womenís games, however, in the doubles event will see Luxembourg, Cyprus, Iceland, San Marino and Monaco all play each other in a mini-league format. The game times have been set at 09:30, 10:10, 10:50, 15:20 and 16:40. The first three nations in the standings will claim the gold, silver and bronze medal depending on their final finish.
